Mysore, the cultural capital of the state of Karnataka, is one of the most famous cities in South India for its pristine and majestic appearance. Mysore's ancient beauty, well-maintained gardens, ancient mansions and cool shady roads captivate the minds of every visitor.
Mysore, also known as the 'City of Sandalwood', is a city located in the state of Karnataka and is known for its fragrant sandalwood and rose petals. It is also proudly known by the locals as the City of Ivory and the Palace City. Mysore, also known as the Yoga City, is a popular center for the art of yoga. According to the Devi Bhagava Purana, the city of Mysore is said to have been ruled by an asura dynasty king named Mahishasuran during the Adi period, according to the Asura Devi Bhagava Purana. Legend has it that the goddess Chamundi killed Mahishasura and became the guardian deity of the city. The Chamundi deity has a temple on the Chamundi hill in the eastern part of the city. Originally known as Mahisha-uru, the city was later renamed Mahishuru and was further abbreviated as Mysore. The name was finalized as Mysore in English times.
There are references in the literature written as early as 245 BC as evidence that Mysore was a famous place during the reign of King Ashoka. However, historical evidence of Mysore dates back to the 10th century AD. According to historical sources, it was ruled by the Ganga dynasty from the 2nd century AD to 1004 AD. The rule of the Chola dynasty continued for a hundred years thereafter. Mysore continued to be ruled by the Chalukya dynasty until the 10th century. The Cholas who ruled Mysore again in the 10th century lost Mysore to the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th century. The Hoysalas built many temples in Mysore and further expanded Mysore. The city is home to palaces, parks, lakes, sandalwood, silk, dazzling historical sites, cultures and natural resources, as well as treasures of nature. The entire city is rich in historical heritage and modern lifestyles.
