Kalvarayan HillsKallakurichi is close to the Kalavarayan hills. The proximity of the clouds to the top of the Vellimalai hill is a popular tourist spot for the local people during the monsoon season. Vellimalai is an ancient unexplored place. There are many villages on the hill top of Kalvarayan Hills and in the cold climate of Eenaddu.
It is a part of the Eastern Ghats, situated on the western edge of Kallakurichi taluk. This region is spread over an area of 600 sq km. With an altitude of about 1000 ft to 3800 ft above sea level. The history of the Kalarayan hills along with its vassals goes back to the time of Krishna Devarayar, the emperor of the 'Vijaya Nagar Empire'. Emperor Krishna Devaryar gave the tribals the right to enjoy this land but imposed many taxes on them.
Regarding the hill tribes, it is said that the warriors of the 'Karlar' community came from Kanchipuram and settled in the Kalarayan Hills. After some time they boarded the tribal people called 'Vedar' (hunters) and married their wives. The communities of Karlar and Vedar who are presently called 'Malayalis' call themselves 'Gounders'. The Kalarayan hills have innumerable tourism potentials like water springs, jungle streams, rivers and streams and scenic jungle walks. This place is a real paradise for trekkers. It is also called the 'hill station of the poor' of Tamil Nadu. Every year the district administration is organizing Summer Festival to create awareness among the tribals.
